Design and format. What does an effective resume look like? How do you make it look polished and professional? Where do you start if you aren't a formatting pro?

FORMATTING TIPS:
Keep it simple and consistent
- Align all text left (it's more natural for the eye to read)
- Use a simple text and color scheme - keep it readable!
- Keep text size the same (except for your name)
- Emphasize important words with caps, bold, and italics
- Use bullets (minimize paragraph-style text)
- Avoid columns. These days, resumes are often processed by an ATS (Automatic Tracking System), which reads text left to right across a page... so text from multiple columns can get garbled in the system
- Leave room for white space - let sections breathe
TRY A TEMPLATE:
If you want a great starting point, use one of these Google Docs templates! (The two on the right are from TheMuse)
- To edit, simply click on the image to open the file in Google Docs - then click "file" and "save as" to make a copy in your Drive.
